Issue No. 3 | Reset Your Routine

Morning Routines Are About Progress, Not Perfection.

By Dom Roberts

WHEN I USED TO THINK about having a routine, I pictured someone extremely disciplined. Maybe a few people even come to mind—like the influencers who share their 6 AM workout, followed by a 12-step skincare regimen, and finish off the morning with a breakfast made from ingredients they grew in their own garden. I love them. They’re amazing for that. Except I don’t think that’s realistic for most people (I am most people).

Whenever I tried to commit to a rigorous routine, I’d end up overwhelmed and struggling to keep up, which ultimately led me to give up altogether. I finally found success with a routine when I simplified it down to the basics. I suggest starting with just two things you want to do for yourself each morning. It could be something as simple as a quick bit of skincare or enjoying a cup of tea while journaling for 15 minutes. It doesn’t have to be intense or perfect. It just needs to be something that allows you to synchronize your inner self with your outer self. This fall I’m committing myself to 10 minutes of stretching in the morning, a couple laps around my block, and 30 mins of reading a book. Remember that the goal is connection with self, not perfection.”

I love to create an 'IN's and Out's' list for every new season, so I’m sharing mine below. I wish you all a happy fall! Remember, loving and giving back to ourselves allows us to share and give back to our loved ones more deeply.

IN'S FOR FALL

  • Facetime calls with friends
  • Baking
  • Sunset walks
  • Matching sets
  • Nostalgic TV shows

OUT'S FOR FALL

  • Texting your ex
  • Not living in the present
  • Impulse purchases
  • Stressing over things you can't control
  • Things that no longer serve you
